Working closely with our customers of monometallic driers, we have soon realized that final user is not always convenient to
deal with them, that is prepare mixture of driers by oneself. Therefore, along with monometallic we have developed a number
of formulations of polymetallic (mixed) driers, which are based on 2-ethylhexanoate "desiccant" metals (cobalt, manganese),
and various promoters. It should be emphasized that they do not contain lead compounds.
Generally the amount injected into the desiccant coatings is calculated from the ratio of active metal and film-former, as it is well- known that effect of desiccant in the film-forming system largely depends on its quantity.
It is established experimentally that for drying of alkyd varnish PF-060 less mixed octoate driers on 60-70% (except for metal) must be used than the 64P and hardness of the cured coating in the first case is on 10-15% higher.
Hardness of paint coatings based on PF-060 with addition of various driers are given in Table. 1. Drying time up to grade 3 at 20 (± 2) °C in all cases was 24 hours.

Results suggest that blend driers of LLC "ARSENAL GRUPP", containing mixture of metals in optimal ratio, successfully replace highly toxic lead-driers in the polycondensation paint-and-varnish materials. All blend driers, listed in Table 2, are less toxic and significantly lighter (color by iodometric scale when diluted with white spirit 1:20 not more 20 mg J2/100 cm3) than traditional ones. Their introduction in enamels of light-colors does not change color.
Currently we offer to producers of drying oils, oil paints, alkyd varnishes and enamels blend polymetallic driers of various kinds. Recommendations for their use are given in Table 2.

In studying the properties of synthesized driers effectiveness of calcium octoate, zinc, barium as dispersers has been verified. With this aim 0.5 parts (by weight) of driers ArdoS-04, ArdoS-03 and ArdoS-05 of mark A were added in pigment paste of white enamel PF-115 and in the same dispersing time in bead mill degree of dispersion was determined. Test results of dispersive properties of octoates Ca, Zn, Ba are given in Table 3.

Data of Table 3 show that all tested driers have good affect on speed of dispersion, but 2-ethylhexanoate calcium (ArdoS-04) has the best dispersing properties. Taken into consideration that according to the literature data ions Ca² reduce activation energy of cobalt, use of calcium octoate is highly desirable. To confirm this, we determined hardness of the enamel coating on the basis of the PF-115 white with addition of different driers. Drying time up to grade 3 at 20 (± 2) °C in all cases was 24 hours. Results of comparative tests are given in Table. 4.

We have also studied effectiveness of dispersion of calcium octoate as compared with soy lecithin in the manufacture of
enamel PF-115 of white and green colors (see picture). The figure shows that dispersion of pigments in the initial period
(15-20 min.) takes almost the same for all systems. At further dispersion pigment pastes containing calcium octoate reach
degree of fineness 25 mm in 30 minutes and those containing lecithin - only in 45-50 min. Without use of disperser
dispersion time up to 25 mcm is 65-70 min. Thus use of calcium octoate in the amount of 0.5-0.6 parts (by weight) per 100
parts of pigment paste can reduce time of dispersion on 40-50%.
Thus, studies have shown that use of 2-ethyl hexane carbon acid for getting of driers allows you:
- Eliminate lead from formulation of driers;
- Reduce number of active metals introduced into the film-forming system;
- Improve quality of coatings based on paintwork materials with these driers;
- Intensify the process of pigments dispersing.
